Music for the Senses

The new album “Show Your Bones” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs came out in March and it is so hot I can hardly stand it. Lets forget for just a few seconds how utterly cool this band is and focus on the music. Karen O the lead signer is the epitomy of not giving a hoot and thank God for it. Not only has she outrageous style that is completely undifinable but she rocks out like she is the queen of the world. She is not opposed to going in to minor twitches and/or convultions when the beat leads her to do so. Her voice is, for lack of a better word, cute. Mix this with a hard rock edge and a wonderful sound is produced. The rock and roll isn’t too much either. Sometimes these new indie bands (Alexis on Fire), in a need to be different, feel that they have to scream thier lyrnix out of thier throught to make the music sound different, when all it does is sound irritating. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs remind me a lot of Metric, with their girl lead singers and cutie pie indie looks, which make me want to run out and buy a new pair of converse sneakers, and go scuff them up in the front row of a outdoor concert.
“Show Your Bones” takes you on a great ride. You don just get a few great songs, you get a whole album of great songs.
One thing I am really happy the band did is put their new single as the first track. I can’t think of a band that has ever done this. This shows real guts. Not having to nestle your best song way down at track 9 in order to get the listener throught the rest of the album is gutsy. I am notorious for having a really short attention span. Everything from men to music, I get really bored really quickly, so when I can get through a whole album start to finish you have scored royally.
“Show Your Bones” is now my daily soundtrack. With songs like Warrior and Sweets I don’t have to put my shuffle on shuffle.
Unfortunately the Yeah Yeah Yeahs don’t have any plans to visit the Alberta area anytime soon, which is no surprise to me. The closest place they are playing is out in Vancouver, so if you are a die hard then go for it, and let me know how the show is.
For now I am just going to have to rock out to this sweet album at home in front of the mirror or riding my board down Squrriel st.
